at first i thought maybe it was to avoid overall game issues as the esc key is used in the primary game menu to bring up the settings menu and to close out the game from the game select menu. I dont know what the best setup for this game should be and i plan to experiment i the future, but hitting the m or number 4 key to pause or go into the in game menu is idiotic at best, why not the esc key. Now you could say just use a keyboard and mouse, to which i will say tat the keyboard and mouse option is like playing the game on the PS2, extremely unintuitive. the issue doesn't seem to effect my old xbox 360 controler though so its not much of an issue. not 100% sure this is the fault of square enix, but the issue should have been found and reported to Microsoft if the issue is the controller. this can be changed by plugging in the controller and running it in wired mode (updated firmware and the issue persists).
